A Relic Neutrino Detector
نویسنده
چکیده
Probably the most promising way of detecting cosmic neutrinos is measuring the mechanical force exerted by elastic scattering of cosmic neutrinos from macroscopic targets. The expected acceleration is ∼ 10cm/s for Dirac neutrinos of mass ∼ 10 eV and local density ∼ 10/cm. A novel torsion balance design is presented, which addresses the sensitivity-limiting factors of existing balances, such as seismic and thermal noise, and angular readout resolution and stability.

Core-collapse supernova neutrinos and neutrino properties
Core-collapse supernovae are powerful neutrino sources. The observation of a future (extra-)galactic supernova explosion or of the relic supernova neutrinos might provide important information on the supernova dynamics, on the supernova formation rate and on neutrino properties. One might learn more about unknown neutrino properties either from indirect effects in the supernova (e.g. on the exp...
متن کاملThe Supernova Relic Neutrino Backgrounds at KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande
We calculate the Supernova Relic Neutrino (SRN) background flux for the KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (Super-K) detectors, motivated by the reduction in background at Super-K and new results for the star formation history (e.g., from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)). Our best estimate for the flux at Super-K is slightly below, but very close to the current Super-K upper limit. The Super-K up...
متن کاملGravitational Clustering of Relic Neutrinos Jc a P 12 ( 2004 ) 005
Possible ways of detecting the cosmic neutrino background are described and their difficulties discussed. Among them, the capture on the radioactive tritium nuclei is challenging, but perhaps doable. The principal difficulty is the need for the combination of a very strong source and very good detector resolution. It is argued that if it turns out that the neutrino masses follow the degenerate ...
متن کاملInteractions of keV sterile neutrinos with matter
A sterile neutrino with mass of several keV is a well-motivated dark-matter candidate, and it can also explain the observed velocities of pulsars via anisotropic emission of sterile neutrinos from a cooling neutron star. We discuss the interactions of such relic particles with matter and comment on the prospects of future direct detection experiments. A relic sterile neutrino can interact, via ...
متن کاملDetectability of the Supernova Relic Neutrinos and Neutrino Oscillation
We investigate the flux and the event rate of the supernova relic neutrino background (SRN) at the SuperKamiokande detector for various neutrino oscillation models with parameters inferred from recent experimental results. A realistic model of neutrino emission from supernova explosions and several models of the cosmic star formation history are adopted in the calculation. The number flux over ...
متن کاملIndirect search for Dark Matter with the ANTARES neutrino telescope
Relic neutralinos produced after the Big Bang are favoured candidates for Dark Matter. They can accumulate at the centre of massive celestial objects like our Sun. Their annihilation can result in a high-energy neutrino flux that could be detectable as a localised emission with earthbased neutrino telescopes like ANTARES. In this paper a brief overview of the prospects of the indirect search fo...
